Karen
Roberson Powell from Marshall, NC, is a powerful and unique force
in the world of contemporary sculpture. Her work has been exhibited
worldwide and has been widely recognized and collected for its beauty
and craft. Her philosophy, which is clearly illustrated in her work,
is that living is balancing. The sculptures portray our balancing
acts. They are physical metaphors for this intangible yet ever present
process. The figures in each sculpture are placed in symbolic environments,
particularly architectural elements. These physical elements are
tied to the individual's home, work or spiritual life. She plays
the structural design of architectural elements against the organic
forms of figure and globe. She is also fascinated by the way that,
sculpturally, objects may acheive a balance, in spite of inherent
physical impossibilities. She believes that, perhaps, as with everything
else, balance can be real or imagined. |
