LuAnne Tackett Simpson's lifelong love of, and involvement in, art led her to return to college to pursue an education in studio art and art history. She received both her Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, in 1995, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1999, from Georgia State University in Atlanta. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key National Honor Societies and was active in student art league activities while at GSU.
Choosing clay as her medium for sculpture, her work process involves intricately carved plaster press-molds, done by hand, used to achieve the bas-relief, highly textured surfaces. Each piece is individually modeled, layered with natural stains, oxides and colorants, and undergoes multiple kiln-firings to produce works that are one-of-a-kind.
In the works from the Sanctuary series, the figurative sculptures are symbolic of the clay vessel in which our human spirit dwells. Openings and passageways in the pieces refer to dark niches in the earth as well as those in our own psyches, and represent a paradox between inviting and foreboding. The biomorphic shapes and lush floral patterning in the relief represent growth and transformation and suggest the spiritual connection among all living things. The textured surfaces serve as a metaphor for the psychological and spiritual aspects of being human.
